ITF backs G8 Aids campaign

19 April 2007

Global union federation the ITF and its hundreds of affiliated unions are using the international Workers’ Memorial Day on 28 April to take forward a union campaign to push HIV/Aids to the front of the G8’s agenda when it meets in Germany in June. A similar effort last year led to significant positive action by the G8 summit.

On 28 April trade unions worldwide affiliated to the ITF will be petitioning the embassies of G8 host nation Germany, asking the government there to support the creation of a high level working group on HIV/Aids. In 2006 a similar union initiative persuaded the G8 to set up a process for surveillance of infectious diseases through timely reporting and data sharing. The summit also agreed to help developing countries build capacity for national surveillance and monitoring systems by improving cooperation and providing technical assistance and training.  However, the G8 has yet to create a working group, which is considered a critical step towards fulfilling its promise to provide universal access to prevention and treatment by 2010.

Dr Asif Altaf, ITF Global HIV/Aids Coordinator, commented: “Last year our efforts were rewarded with important and positive action by the G8 group. This year we believe that together we can persuade the summit that it needs to take this next step in order to help contain and counter the disease.”

The initiative is being spearheaded by the Global Unions group (www.global-unions.org), whose model letter to embassies can be seen at www.global-unions.org/pdf/ohsewpT_9Ba.EN.pdf. For more details of Workers’ Memorial Day see www.hazards.org/wmd.
