Aviation workers forge links across Asia
17 avril 2007
The ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation) will tomorrow launch a new web forum for workers at Air Asia at the same time as two Malaysian and Indonesian aviation trade unions pledge to cooperate with each other at a public ceremony in Jakarta.
The new ITF website www.akstaff-connect.org will provide a safe space for Air Asia employees to discuss their work and conditions. It has been created by the ITF following its concerns at the lack of union representation for workers at the airline.
The website’s launch will coincide with the signing of a memorandum of understanding by the Malaysian Maseu trade union and the Indonesian Ikagi union. This commits both organisations to work together to best represent the needs of civil aviation workers across the region, including those of Air Asia. Following the public signing the unions will hold a press conference at 13.00 tomorrow 18 April 2007, at Gedung PGRI, Room 208, JL. Tanah Abang III, No 24, Jakarta Pusat, Indonesia. (For further details please contact Mustafar Maroof on email musmar28@hotmail.com or telephone 6019-2080985, or Zainudin Malik on email malik@ikagi.com or zainudinmalik@yahoo.com and telephone: +62-815-820-3155 or +62-21-71004002.
ITF Civil Aviation Section Secretary Ingo Marowsky commented: “Today sees a significant step forward for civil aviation workers across Asia, as part of a growing push to increase their representation right across the region. It also sees the launch of a website for Air Asia workers that is intended to allow them to take the debate forward themselves and give us and our affiliated unions pointers as to how they want us to proceed.”
