Death threat trade unionist arrives in Italy (Anche in Italiano)

Oscar Gonzalez, a colleague of murdered Guatemalan trade union leader Pedro Zamora, and himself under threat of death, arrives in Italy today for a three day (19 to 21 March) visit, during which he will a be available to talk to media. While in Italy he will be attending the major dockers’ and seafarers’ meeting being held by the ITF in Sorrento from 19 to 24 March.
The visit has been organised by the ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation) and its regional arm the ETF (European Transport Workers’ Federation) as part of a campaign for justice following the murder of Pedro Zamora, who was murdered after months of the same kind of intimidation now being experienced by Oscar Gonzalez, his colleagues and their families (see Related Press at www.itfglobal.org/campaigns/zamora.cfm for previous news releases, along with background, updates and a short film about the killing of Pedro Zamora). Zamora was shot following attempts to secure the jobs of nine workers who had been unfairly dismissed, and after a police occupation of the port.
Oscar Gonzalez arrives in Italy following high level meetings with members of the European Parliament, politicians, trade unions and human rights groups in Brussels, Strasbourg and Madrid. The European Union supplies a significant share of the budget for improving justice and security under the Guatemalan government's 'Vamos Guatemala' development programme. It is also a major donor to other elements of the initiative on human rights, the peace process, and dialogue and democracy. The European Investment Bank (EIB) also provides loans to the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), which is a likely source of funding for the proposed restructuring of the Port of Quetzal. Speaking on behalf of the workers of the port, he asked MEPs and the European Parliament to:
· Monitor the trade union rights situation in Guatemala.
· Take measures to ensure accountability by the Guatemalan government for the funding that it receives from the European Union.
· Establish the limits of the EIB’s role, if any, in the proposed privatisation of the Port of Quetzal via its relationship with the CABEI.
Throughout his visit Oscar Gonzalez will be demanding a proper investigation, without fear or favour, into the murder of Pedro Zamora, and ensuring that the union is consulted and involved in the proposed restructuring of the Port of Quetzal, in the interests of safeguarding social rights and to make sure that any development benefits the majority of Guatemalans.

Il sindacalista sotto minaccia di morte arriva in Italia
Oscar Gonzalez, un collega del leader sindacalista guatemalteco assassinato Pedro Zamora, ed egli stesso sotto minaccia di morte, arriva in Italia oggi per una visita di tre giorni (19-21 marzo). Egli sarà a disposizione dei media. Durante il suo soggiorno in Italia sarà presente alla principale riunione dei lavoratori portuali e dei naviganti organizzata dall’ITF a Sorrento dal 19 al 24 marzo.
Questa visita è stata organizzata dall’ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation) e dal suo ramo regionale l’ETF (European Transport Workers’ Federation) come parte di una campagna per la giustizia in seguito all’assassinio di Pedro Zamora, che è stato ucciso dopo mesi dello stesso tipo di intimidazione alla quale sono ora soggetti Oscar Gonzalez, i suoi colleghi e le loro famiglie (vedi Related Press al sito www.itfglobal.org/campaigns/zamora.cfm per pubblicazioni di notizie precedenti, unitamente al background, ad aggiornamenti ed ad un breve film sull’assassinio di Pedro Zamora). Zamora fu ucciso, in seguito a tentativi miranti a proteggere i posti di nove lavoratori che erano stati ingiustamente licenziati e dopo l’occupazione del porto da parte della polizia.
Oscar Gonzalez arriva in Italia in seguito a riunioni ad alto livello con membri del Parlamento europeo, uomini politici, sindacati e gruppi di diritti umani in Bruxelles, Strasburgo e Madrid. L’Unione Europea fornisce una parte notevole del budget per migliorare la giustizia e la sicurezza sotto il programma di sviluppo del Guatemala 'Vamos Guatemala'. Essa è inoltre uno dei principali donatori ad altri elementi dell’iniziativa sui diritti umani, sul processo della pace e dialogo e democrazia. La European Investment Bank (EIB) fornisce inoltre prestiti alla Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), che è una possible fonte di finanziamenti per la proposta ristrutturazione del porto di Quetzal. Parlando a nome dei lavoratori del porto, egli ha chiesto ai Membri del Parlamento Europeo ed al Parlamento Europeo di:
· Tenere sotto controllo la situazione dei diritti sindacali in Guatemala.
· Prendere provvedimenti affinché il governo del Guatemala si assuma la responsabilità per i finanziamenti che esso riceve dall’Unione Europea.
· Definire le restrizioni del ruolo dell’EIB, se del caso, nella proposta privatizzazione del porto di Quetzal tramite i suoi rapporti col CABEI.
Durante la sua visita Oscar Gonzalez chiederà che venga effettuata un’indagine appropriata, senza timori o favori, sull’assassinio di Pedro Zamora, ed avere la certezza che il sindacato sia consultato e coinvolto nella proposta ristrutturazione del porto di Quetzal, al fine di salvaguardare i diritti sociali e di avere la certezza che qualsiasi sviluppo vada a beneficio della maggioranza della gente del Guatemala.
