Ryanair ‘mocks Italian court’
23 January 2007
Ryanair is today accused of mocking the law, after engineering an adjournment within the first minutes of a case being held against it in an Italian labour court. As the hearing opened the airline’s personnel director, Eddie Wilson, claimed he would not be able to make any contribution, as he didn’t trust his lawyer's translation skills and wanted a professional interpreter.
Scheduled since before Christmas, the court, which will rule on whether Ryanair must recognise and negotiate with the trade union chosen by its Italian workers (see www.itfglobal.org/press-area/index.cfm/pressdetail/1148 ), has now been rescheduled to 6 February.
Speaking from the tribunal ITF Civil Aviation Secretary Ingo Marowsky commented: “Oh what fun Ryanair are having today, with their last minute call for an interpreter for a hearing scheduled six weeks ago.”
“The airline’s management has snubbed a legitimate labour court. These kind of diversionary tactics show how seriously they take both the court and the airline’s workers’ concerns. I suspect that both will remember it when the time comes to pass judgement.”
