Campaign for justice for Pedro Zamora begins as his colleagues receive death threats (También en version española)

The ITF is today launching a campaign for justice for Pedro Zamora, the Guatemalan trade union leader gunned down in front of his children on Monday. The campaign was brought into even sharper focus this morning when the Federation received news that the remaining five union leaders have been followed and are receiving regular death threats – as happened to Mr Zamora before he was executed. The ITF is inviting unions worldwide to join it in racking up the pressure on the Guatemalan authorities not to sweep the politically motivated assassination under the carpet and to protect the union members.
The five surviving leaders of the STEPQ union have told the ITF that they are receiving telephoned death threats, they are being followed, and one has a car with people in it constantly parked in front of his house. They say that they are particularly concerned because those phoning them say they aren’t just going to kill them, but will murder their families too.
ITF General Secretary David Cockroft said today: “Justice for Pedro begins here and it begins now. This cowardly attack, in which multiple assailants rammed the car of an unarmed man picking up his children from hospital, before firing a storm of shots at him, has caused revulsion in everyone who has heard about it. We intend to harness that revulsion to ensure that a precedent is set, and murderers no longer feel they can kill with impunity.”
He continued: “We are putting the Guatemalan government and police on notice that they must protect the other threatened men. As well as the campaign for Pedro I will write today to that country’s President to demand that he intervenes to provide adequate protection for them immediately and that we will hold him personally responsible if any of them are harmed.”
In communications being sent to unions worldwide today Cockroft explains: ‘As you know, the General Secretary of the ITF’s port union in Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala, Pedro Zamora Alvarez, was brutally murdered by a death squad on 7pm on 15 January. His three-year-old son was also injured in the attack. The ITUC and the ITF are submitting a joint complaint to the International Labour Organization and there have already been many protest letters and messages of condolence sent.
However, in this particularly shocking and violent case, the ITF wants to do more. It is important to ensure that Pedro Zamora’s death is properly investigated and that the authors and the perpetrators are brought to justice. We also want to ensure that the port workers of Guatemala win their battle to achieve proper recognition and respect in the process of modernisation of their port. Pedro’s commitment to the union cause is the reason he was targeted for political killing – his death must not be in vain. For this reason, we are today launching a Campaign for Justice for Pedro Zamora. We are calling on unions internationally to:
1. Continue to send protest letters to the government of Guatemala, condemning this assassination, demanding an investigation into the murder and asking that the perpetrators be brought to justice.
2. Approach Members of Parliament, Congress and Assembly Deputies to support the campaign by asking that their governments seek a firm assurance from the government of Guatemala that Pedro Zamora’s killers will be brought to justice through a transparent judicial process
3. Circulate the Charter for Justice to union members and public figures for signature and return to the ITF. This charter is also available in petition form on the ITF website.’

Una Campaña por justicia para Pedro Zamora ha comenzado y sus colegas reciben amenazas de muerte
Hoy, la ITF está lanzando una campaña por justicia para Pedro Zamora, el líder sindical Guatemalteco quien fuera muerto a tiros frente a sus hijos, el Lunes. La campaña ha conducido a situaciones muy filosas esta mañana cuando la Federación recibió noticias de que los cinco restantes dirigentes del sindicato habían sido seguidos y recibido en forma regular amenazas de muerte - como sucediera con el Señor Zamora antes de ser ejecutado. La ITF está invitando a los sindicatos en todo el mundo a unirse a ella para aumentar la presión sobre las autoridades Guatemaltecas para no esconder las motivaciones políticas del asesinato debajo de la alfombra y para proteger a los/as miembros del sindicato.
Los cinco dirigentes sobrevivientes del sindicato STEPQ le han manifestado a la ITF que están recibiendo amenazas telefónicas de muerte, ellos están siendo seguidos, y uno de ellos tiene un vehículo con personas estacionado permanentemente frente a su domicilio. Nosotros intentamos utilizar esa revulsión para asegurar que el precedente esta colocado, y los asesinos entiendan que ellos no pueden matar con impunidad.”
Continuó diciendo: “Nosotros estamos colocando al gobierno de Guatemala y a la policía sobre aviso que ellos deben proteger a las otras personas amenazadas. Como parte de la campaña por Pedro, también le escribí al Presidente de ese país para demandar su intervención para proveer inmediatamente la adecuada protección para ellos y que lo haremos directamente responsable si alguno de ellos es herido.”
En comunicaciones que han sido enviadas hoy a los sindicatos alrededor del mundo Cockroft explica: ‘Como ustedes saben, el Secretario General del sindicato portuario afiliado a la ITF en Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala, Pedro Zamora Álvarez, fue brutalmente asesinado por un escuadrón de la muerte cerca de las 7pm el 15 de Enero. Su hijo de tres años de edad fue herido también en el ataque. La ITUC y la ITF han presentado una queja conjunta a la Organización Internacional del Trabajo y también han sido enviadas numerosas cartas de protesta y condolencias
.
Sin embargo, en este particularmente violento y repugnante caso, la ITF quiere hacer más. Resulta importante asegurar que la muerte de Pedro Zamora sea apropiadamente investigada y que los autores materiales y los instigadores sean llevados ante la justicia. Nosotros queremos asegurar también que los/as trabajadores/as portuarios/as de Guatemala ganen su lucha para el reconocimiento de condiciones apropiadas y respeto en el proceso de modernización de sus puertos. El compromiso de Pedro con la causa de su sindicato es la razón por la cual fue el blanco de un asesinato político - su muerte no debe ser en vano. Por esta razón, nosotros estamos lanzando hoy una Campaña de Justicia para Pedro Zamora. estamos convocando internacionalmente a los sindicatos a:
1. Continuar enviando cartas de protesta al gobierno de Guatemala, condenando este asesinato, demandando una investigación sobre el asesinato y solicitando que los instigadores sean llevados ante la justicia.
