Week of action day four update
7 juin 2007
The ITF Northern European week of action (4-8 June) is now in its fourth day.
ITF inspectors, dockers and union volunteers are checking ships in Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russia, Sweden and the UK (see www.itfglobal.org/press-area/index.cfm/pressdetail/1328 or the action week’s web page at www.itfglobal.org/campaigns/newa.cfm for more details).
These are the reports received of progress so far (16:30) today:
Germany: Over 90 ships inspected during the week by teams of volunteers in Bremerhaven, Hamburg, Rostock, Lubeck and Kiel (Verdi have issued daily press releases in German. Please email dawson_sam@itf.org.uk if you would like to receive these in PDF form).
UK and Ireland: Continued campaigning, especially in the ferry sector. Negotiations with Celtic Link continue. In Dublin, following meetings with the owners of the Fortuna 1 and their legal representatives – and their inability to prove that they can pay the wages owed to the seafarers on that ship – the ITF is assisting the crew with an application to the court for the sale of the vessel in order to recover the owed wages.
Belgium: 11 ships inspected today.
Latvia: 13 ships visited today and yesterday.
France: Demonstration in Cherbourg.
Netherlands: Day described as ‘busy and successful’, including signing of m/v BG Dublin by Verdi because of the action taken in Rotterdam.
Estonia: Three ships inspected today.
Lithuania: Two ships inspected today.
Russia: Seven ships inspected today.
