World Action Day to call for cabin crew licensing
3 December 2004
Civil aviation trade unions all over the world are pulling out all the stops for a special day of action to highlight the need for cabin crew licensing.
The ITF’s cabin crew licensing international day of action on 7 December will call for the worldwide introduction of cabin crew licensing in a bid to ensure the safety-critical role of in-flight staff is recognised. This is particularly important in the face of heightened security awareness in the airline industry and changes to in-flight procedures.
Some countries, including France and the United States already license their cabin crew, but many others do not. The ITF is not only pressing for the introduction of licensing country by country, but also for the International Civil Aviation Organization to require licensing on a universal basis and to provide oversight to ensure compliance.
Ingo Marowsky, ITF Civil Aviation Section Secretary commented, “Cabin crew agree that they feel recognised as safety professionals where licensing is in place. The more this safety role is recognised by everyone, the better cabin crew will be at fulfilling it – whether dealing with security problems, accidents or cases of air rage.”
He added, “An international campaign will illustrate the fact that this is not an issue that is confined to one country or group of countries. Achieving new ICAO rules, require pressure at international level.”
