Unions urged to back logistics workers
27 Abril 2006
The ITF is calling on unions around the world to show solidarity with some 36,000 logistics workers globally who face uncertainty as a result of an impending company sell-off.
TNT, the world’s fourth largest express package company and second largest logistics company, announced last December its intention to sell off its logistics business. Workers at the company want future buyers to commit to a “TNT guarantee of global workers’ rights” to safeguard workers’ wages, conditions, entitlements and job security. The guarantee also calls for information about any proposed sale to be shared with the workers and for union rights and representation to be respected.
Trade unions are being asked to respond to a call to back a joint ITF-Union Network International campaign – Justice at TNT – launched earlier this month. A petition for TNT workers has been set up through the campaign and supporters are able to send aprotest letter to TNT Chief Executive Peter Bakker through Labourstart’s website.
So far unions in countries such as Australia, Britain, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand and the US are supporting the campaign. However, backing from more unions is crucial. Stuart Howard ITF Assistant General Secretary explains: “It’s important that a maximum amount of pressure is exerted by the workforce to make sure the company negotiates with unions to ensure that both jobs and collective bargaining arrangements are properly protected in any sale of TNT logistics.”
