Call to get on board G8 letter-writing campaign on HIV/AIDS
13 Abril 2006
Global Unions is calling on trade unions across the world to lobby their government and embassies on the issue of HIV/AIDS as part of International Commemoration Day activities on 28 April. The lobby is the first step in an international campaign, launched in February, to demand the creation of a G8 working group on HIV and AIDS.
Global Unions, of which the ITF is a member, is urging trade unions in G8 countries to write to their government demanding support for the establishment of a permanent high-level working group on HIV/AIDS at the G8 summit in St Petersburg, Russia, in July. Those in non-G8 countries are being asked to write to embassies of G8 countries.
Dr Asif Altaf, ITF Global HIV/AIDS Coordinator commented: “We urge trade unions to join this campaign to demand a permanent high-level working group on HIV/AIDS. A working group will ensure continuity, maintain momentum, and support progress by continuing to refine G8 policies on HIV/AIDS. This will make the goal of universal access to treatment more attainable.”
Model letters have been drawn up for trade unions in G8 countries (http://www.global-unions.org/pdf/ohsewpT_7d.EN.pdf); in non-G8 industrialised countries (http://www.global-unions.org/pdf/ohsewpT_7e.EN.pdf); in countries where HIV/AIDS is a major concern (http://www.global-unions.org/pdf/ohsewpT_7f.EN.pdf); and in countries where HIV/AIDS is a future concern (http://www.global-unions.org/pdf/ohsewpT_7g.EN.pdf).Notícias relacionadas:
