Global unions to lobby key ministerial meetings on HIV/AIDS

10 March 2006

Global unions, the ITF among them, are planning a high profile lobby of key ministerial meetings this year to call for more action on HIV/AIDS. The plan follows a pledge to step up HIV/AIDS campaigning made at a meeting last week.

The Global Unions’ HIV/AIDS programme steering committee on 3 March, took the decision to build momentum for establishing a permanent working group on HIV and AIDS at the G8 Summit in July in St Petersburg, Russia. The first step towards this is for HIV/AIDS campaigners to join the International Commemoration Day for Dead and Injured Workers (ICD) on 28 April, to pave the way for a four-month lobby of ministers attending UN meetings and G8 preparations. A review of the UN Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS will take place during UN meetings and will lead directly to the G8 Summit.

Alan Leather, Chair of the steering committee said, “For ten years now, the 28 April ICD has mobilised workers around health and safety issues, generating more than 10,000 activities in 110 countries last year alone. Trade unions chose HIV/AIDS as a principal theme for this year’s commemoration because of its connection to the world of work, enterprises and workers’ lives.

“ICD on 28 April will set into motion a lobbying effort with government ministers that will continue long beyond the date.”

Ministerial meetings building up to the G8 Summit are: the UN Commission on Sustainable Development in May; the International Labour Organization in June and the UN General Assembly in May and June.
