Al Salam 98 rescue effort continues

6 February 2006

A rescue operation is under way in the Red Sea to find survivors of the ferry Al Salam 98. So far just 388 survivors of the 1400 passengers and crew on board have been found. The reasons for the loss of the ship have not yet been established.

Commenting on this appalling loss, ITF General Secretary David Cockroft said: "The ITF joins everyone in praying that the rescue effort will succeed and more survivors will be found, and in expressing our sympathy for the relatives of all those affected. We wish well those who will investigate the causes of this tragedy, and hope that when they are discovered they can be used to make the seas safer."
