Arab unions call for action over terrorist attacks on truckers

Truck drivers facing injury, torture, even murder, as a result of terrorism should be protected and their families awarded compensation, according to transport unions in the Arab region.Road transport unions from Iraq, Syria and Jordan condemned terrorism in a joint statement at an ITF workshop, sponsored by the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung and held in Amman, Jordan on 22-24 November. Terrorist incidents are an ever-present reality every time truckers drive in and out of Iraq.
The participants declared their solidarity with truck drivers and their families and called on the governments concerned to take action to protect the workers from terrorist attacks. They also demanded compensation for the families of injured, kidnapped or murdered drivers.
Bilal Malkawi of the ITF’s Arab World Offices said: “Drivers from all nationalities are being targeted by terrorists, but many of them are from south Asia; the majority of them have now left their jobs. Transport unions around the world should put pressure on governments in the region to pay more attention to this important issue.”
