Trade unionists urged to back international HIV/AIDS campaign
01/12/05
The ITF is urging trade unionists across the world to back a global campaign to combat HIV and AIDS, as international attention focuses on the issue today on World AIDS Day, 1 December.
In a letter to affiliates on 28 November, ITF General Secretary David Cockroft said: “World AIDS Day is important in reminding transport workers that the problem is growing dangerously and that HIV/AIDS is a workplace and trade union issue.” He continued: “Trade unions are uniquely placed to respond to the pandemic, as the workplace can be a vital entry point for information, prevention, treatment and the protection of rights.”
The World AIDS Campaign – themed “Stop AIDS: keep the promise” – aims to hold world leaders accountable for commitments to turn around the course of the HIV epidemic. It provides a platform for the engagement of all sectors - including the labour movement - to support the fulfilment of the 2001 Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS, through action within their respective constituencies. The Global Unions HIV/AIDS Programme, in which the ITF is actively involved, and the World AIDS Campaign share a common goal: to see trade unions play a key role in a comprehensive response to the pandemic.
“Stopping the momentum of HIV/AIDS demands a coordinated global response on a scale equal to that of the disease itself. The targets specified in the Declaration of Commitment were agreed by 189 countries at a Special Session of the UN General Assembly in 2001, yet many nations have failed to meet them,” stated Cockroft.
“Everyone can contribute: make your promise to support the campaign and promote it among your friends and colleagues. By creating new partnerships we can make sure that the voice of working people is heard, and that we hold our leaders accountable for the promises they made on our behalf.”
