UK airline catering dispute set to widen as workers in Ireland vote for action

A dispute involving more than 600 sacked in-flight catering workers in the UK, could spread to Ireland, according to an Irish ITF affiliate.
Workers at the UK operations of US-owned airline catering company Gate Gourmet were dismissed during a dispute that started last week over the employment of 130 seasonal workers. Now it appears that the company’s Irish operations could face a similar dispute.
Gate Gourmet employees in Dublin, represented by the Services Industrial Professional and Technical Union (Siptu) have voted in favour of industrial action. This follows management’s refusal to continue to meet the terms of a national pay agreement and threats to impose new employment terms.
Siptu Civil Aviation Branch Official Pat Ward commented: “While we have tried to resolve these issues through the normal industrial relations channels, management has done everything in its power to frustrate the process.
“They appear to be following similar tactics to their UK counterparts.
“Following an overwhelming ballot in favour of industrial action, our members now have official sanction to take industrial action - up to and including strike – if management attempt to force through change without agreement. This will inevitably lead to some disruption to passenger services in airlines serviced by Gate Gourmet,” he concluded.
Talks between Gate Gourmet and the ITF-affiliated Transport and General Workers’ Union, which represents the sacked UK workers, broke down earlier this week after management refused to reinstate all those they dismissed.
