ITF calls for substantial improvements in seafarers’ pay and conditions

15 June 2005

The ITF last week called for a significant wage hike for seafarers at the International Bargaining Forum (IBF) in Rome, Italy.

The IBF, which considers seafarers’ pay and conditions, brought together 45 delegates representing 24 countries. They included a joint negotiating group (JNG), comprised of representatives of the International Maritime Employers’ Committee and the International Mariners’ Management Association of Japan.

At the discussions, the ITF put the case for a 10 per cent increase in seafarers’ pay as well as substantial improvements in their working conditions. These would come into effect on 1 January next year. The federation also focused on social, financial and professional issues relating to partnership and cooperation with the IBF.

The JNG responded to the claim by stating that improvements in seafarers’ employment conditions should be offset against the total cost of the claim. It also sought improvements in benefits available to members, such as better disputes procedures and welfare fund arrangements.

The next round of negotiations will take place in Mumbai, India, on 20 and 21 July; negotiations are set to conclude in Tokyo, Japan, on 5 October.

“Both sides recognise that there will be difficult negotiations ahead, but we are satisfied with the progress of the meeting and feel that discussions have been constructive,” commented ITF Special Seafarers’ Department Secretary Stephen Cotton.
