Dockers in the port of Montreal, Canada, went back to work last week after discussions brought a six-day lockout to an end.

Some 900 workers, represented by the ITF-affiliated Syndicat des Debardeurs, were locked out on 18 July by the Maritime Employers’ Association, while they were in the middle of contract negotiations. However, talks between the union and managers and facilitated by a mediator on 23 July, led to an agreement to end the lockout. Dockers in the port returned to work on 24 July. It is understood that negotiations between the parties are to continue.

Frank Leys, ITF dockers’ section secretary, commented: “We’re glad that an agreement to end the lockout was reached. Now we hope that the negotiations with the union will be carried out in good faith so that a decent contract can be put in place.”
