Union wins settlement for civil aviation authority workers in South Africa

A South African union has reached an agreement with the civil aviation authority ending indefinite strike action.
Some 300 workers employed by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), represented by the ITF-affiliated South African Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu), ended their wage dispute when a settlement was reached on 15 July. The workers, which include those who are employed to license pilots, register aircraft and carry out accident inspections, had walked out on strike on 9 July after they refused to accept a management offer. The workers were offered either a seven per cent across the board wage deal or a nine per cent deal conditional on the union agreeing to waive all future rights to negotiate wages.
The new pay deal, which was reached following intervention by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration and by the SACAA board, gives workers a 9.5 per cent across the board pay rise without conditions.
Kenneth Monnana, Satawu national aviation sector coordinator, commented: “SACAA management conducted itself very badly during the strike. The chief executive officer initially refused to allow striking union members to picket at the employer’s premises, despite the fact that this right exists in the Labour Relations Act. He also attempted to intimidate strikers by taking a number of steps such as claiming that picketers were violating picketing rules and complaining about strikers blowing vuvuzelas. Despite all these intimidatory measures, the strike continued peacefully and lawfully. Satawu salutes the strikers.”
