Filipino unions protest over murdered trade unionist in Burma

Trade unionists vented their anger over the murder of Ko Moe Naung in Burma at a lightning rally in Makati City in the Philippines on 2 June.
Koe Moe Naung, an organiser for ITF affiliate the Seafarers’ Union of Burma (SUB), was arrested on 19 May by unidentified men. He was brought to an army base in Kawthaung and, within hours of his arrest, was tortured to death during interrogation.
The union activists, who were gathered outside the Burmese embassy, also condemned the detention in prison of trade union leaders Myo Aung Thant and Khin Kyaw, and political leader Daw Aung San Su Kyi. ITF affiliates the Associated Marine Officers and Seamen’s Union of the Philippines, the Filipino railway union Bagong Kapisanan Ng Mga Manggagawa Sa PNR and the Port Workers’ Union of the Philippines were among the protestors. Embassy guards locked the building and refused to hand over a protest letter.
Last month ITF General Secretary David Cockroft wrote to the military junta angrily condemning Ko Moe Naung's murder.
The ITF is coordinating a worldwide campaign to protest against the Burmese government’s actions.
