Transport trade unionists will put the spotlight on organising women workers and raising awareness of gender issues as part of international women’s day on 8 March.

This year the ITF is calling on unions to campaign under the slogan “Your union your future, be part of something big – join a transport union”. The aim is to reach out to more women, particularly the young, in line with the International Trade Union Confederation’s theme “Organising young women workers”, which is part of an ongoing campaign to see gender equality at work and in unions.

Among the activities to take place are a seminar in India, organised by the All India Railway Federation, designed to raise awareness of gender issues and increase women’s participation and a mass workplace campaign in Indonesia, run by the Trade Union of Jakarta International Container Terminal and the Garuda Indonesian Flight Attendant Association. Meanwhile, the Papua New Guinea Maritime Workers' Industrial Union has planned to set up a forum to discuss issues affecting women workers and in Nigeria, the National Union of Air Transport Employees is holding a series of events, including lectures on trade unionism and women’s health, followed by a rally to highlight issues affecting women.

Alison McGarry, ITF women’s coordinator, said: “On this 100th anniversary of international women's day, ITF women will, through their activities, encourage women transport workers to join unions to make unions stronger and more able to represent the needs of working women across the globe.”
