Deutsche Post-DHL sell-off puts 3,500 jobs on the line

08/01/10

A decision to sell off DHL’s domestic express company in France is set to affect some 3,500 jobs, according to French unions.

DHL Express Europe’s chief executive officer, Ken Allen, announced plans to sell the company on 15 December 2009. It is understood that the business has been bought for 200 million euros by Caravelle, an investment fund.

French unions, along with the European Works Council and legal organisations have attempted to ward off the sale by putting forward an alternative proposal; however, Allen refused to meet with the unions to discuss the plans, stating that the decision to sell had been taken.

Ingo Marowksy, ITF global organising coordinator, said: “The company’s refusal to discuss alternatives with the unions shows what little regard management has for the thousands of workers who could lose their jobs. That’s why the ITF is backing the French unions, who will continue to challenge this decision.”

Earlier this week, the company also announced the sale of its domestic parcel service in the UK, which is being sold off to the Home Delivery Network, a UK-based delivery company; meanwhile, its UK container business is being bought by haulier Maritime Group.
