Indonesian union demands Singapore authority intervention in vessel hijacking
7 January 2010
An Indonesian seafarers’ union is urging its government to press the Singaporean authorities for intervention to secure the release of some 17 Indonesian seafarers on board a hijacked vessel.
The Norwegian-owned tanker, MT Pramoni, was hijacked on 1 January 2010 off the coast of Somalia. The ITF-affiliated union Kesatuan Pelaut Indonesia (KPI) has argued that as the tanker was carrying a Singaporean flag, it is the Singaporean government’s responsibility to settle the case and secure the release of the seafarers. Although managed and operated by PT Berlian Laju Tanker based in Jarkarta, Indonesia, the 22 crew – 17 of whom are Indonesian - has been protected through the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union, also an ITF affiliate.
KPI president Hanafi Rustandi commented: “The Singapore government's active role is very crucial, because the oil tanker of a Norwegian company was flying the Singaporean colours.”
It is understood that the seafarers are safe; meanwhile the KPI is monitoring developments in the case.
