Global delivery workers’ website launched in Germany
30 November 2009
Workers in Germany based at global delivery giant, UPS, who feel they are facing intimidation, can now voice their views privately thanks to a new website, which was launched at a meeting in Germany last week.
The website, www.cgn-verdi.de, invites staff at UPS to send in emails highlighting their concerns about working conditions and other workplace issues, including incidences of harassment. The website was established following allegations of intimidation at UPS revealed on another website www.netzwerkit.de/projekte/galeere. The site was launched at a meeting of UPS Cologne airport staff in the city on 26 November, attended by more than 1000 people. Currently only available in German, it is anticipated that the site will in future be rolled out on a global level.
Ingo Marowsky, attended the event in support of the ITF-affiliated union Ver.di, which was running an election campaign for continued representation at the UPS works council. During his address, he reminded participants of the values of UPS founder, Jim Casey, who is reported to have said: “The basic principle that I believe has contributed more than any other to the building of our business is the ownership of our company by the people employed in it.” It is understood that his ethos was built around fostering cooperation with unions and provided good working conditions. It was time that UPS lived up to its founders’ values, Marowsky told the meeting.
