Howard to take trade union and working class interests into heart of SA government

30 September 2009

Randall Howard, elected ITF President in 2006, is stepping down as General Secretary of the Satawu union to take up the position of special advisor on labour relations to South Africa’s Minister of Public Services and Administration. He will take up the new post next month.

Howard’s decision was announced to a special meeting of Satawu’s Central Executive Committee, which responded by expressing its appreciation of his work in the union movement, which stretches back to 1986 when he was first elected as a shop steward at South African Container Depots in Cape Town. The CEC also said that one of the highlights of his career was being elected as ITF President at the Federation’s Congress in Durban in 2006 and advancing the interests of transport workers in Africa and the world.

ITF General Secretary David Cockroft commented: “Randall has been a committed and passionate trade unionist for twenty-three years and we are confident that he will fly the flag for his nation’s trade unionists and for international solidarity in his important new post working with the South African government.”

Randall Howard will inform the ITF Executive Board when it meets in October 2009.
