Strike action leads to new contract at US cargo carrier
18 September 2009
Aviation workers at the US cargo carrier Amerijet have won a deal following two weeks of strike action.
The workers, represented by the ITF-affiliated Teamsters union, ratified an agreement last Sunday. The deal was reached during renewed negotiations between managers of the South Florida carrier and the union. Pilots and flight engineers walked out on strike on 27 August after earlier talks over a new contract broke down. The workers were demanding an end to low pay and deteriorating working conditions; employees claimed they were forced to work long hours on little sleep and were penalised for taking sick leave. They also stated that the conditions in which they were working were insanitary.
Last week the ITF called on members to show solidarity with the workers to boost existing support across the industry from UPS, Atlas Air, and Kalitta pilots.
It is expected that the new four-year contract will be signed this week and that workers will return to work on 21 September.
ITF civil aviation section secretary Gabriel Mocho congratulated the union on its success and added: “We are happy to know that international support was a useful tool in the Amerijet workers’ fight for better pay and conditions. It is clear that organised workers in efficient unions with international visibility can make a difference.”
