ITF expresses condolences to families of Yemenia plane crash victims
2 Julho 2009
The ITF has expressed condolences to the families of those affected by the crash of a Yemeni airline aircraft on 30 June, killing all except a 12-year-old girl. It also noted its concern regarding the low morale of workers at the airline.
The Yemenia A310 airbus left the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, on 29 June, bound for the Comoros Islands and came down in the Indian Ocean in bad weather. According to French transport minister Dominique Bussereau, technical faults had been found on the aircraft during safety inspections in 2007. Since then, the airline had been monitored by the French authorities to verify the safety of its aircraft.
The ITF’s Arab World Office representative Bilal Malkawi said: “This has been a tragic incident, and we send our condolences to all the people for their losses.
“It is unfortunate that the management of Yemenia almost destroyed the union a few years ago, when it was very active. The morale of the workers declined and their working conditions became very bad, which may have contributed to diminished safety standards.
“To make it a safer airline, they have to make sure union rights are respected and well-represented."
Gabriel Mocho, ITF civil aviation section secretary, added: “Workers organised in unions are able to negotiate better working conditions, not only to protect their rights but also to protect their jobs and their lives as in the case of airline crew. When workers’ voices are silenced, like in the case of Yemenia, safety can be put at risk.”
