World protests against Iranian repression tomorrow
25 Junho 2009
Protests for freedom in Iran - including demonstrations in capital cities in front of that country’s embassies - will be held worldwide tomorrow (June 26) organised by four global union organisations and their members, representing over 170 million workers.
The ITF along with the ITUC (International Trade Union Confederation), EI (Education International) and IUF (International Union of Food, Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tobacco and Allied Workers' Associations) have called the worldwide action day to demand justice and to protest against the denial of rights within Iran. (More details of events can be seen at www.justiceforiranianworkers.org).Amnesty International has backed this campaign.
David Cockroft, ITF General Secretary, said: “Tomorrow hundreds of thousands of trade unionists will demonstrate to protest against what is being done in Iran and to demand change. Change so that its people can live without fear of the brutal repression we have all seen recently and change so that they can claim their right to live, work and choose their own trade unions safe from fear.”
“Our friends and colleagues in Iran have asked us to organise support for them in their moment of need and that is what we will be doing: proving the mass support that there is out there for them and their freedoms. Tomorrow we all get the chance to show the government of Iran how discredited it has become and how the whole world feels about the repression and violence it is creating. We intend to raise a worldwide clamour for reform that will force the regime to listen and understand that the time for change has come.”
