Crisis? What crisis?

22 June 2009

Work is under way to measure the impact of the financial crisis on the aviation industry - updating Contesting the Crisis, the definitive survey of how it was affected by the September 11 attacks.

The ITF and ILO (International Labour Organization) have joined to commission a new fact-finding survey which will be researched by the same Swansea and Cardiff University teams who the earlier report.

ITF Civil Aviation Section Secretary Gabriel Mocho commented: “We know that aviation is being hit by the current financial crisis, just as it was by the downturn after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The causes are different but the result - a reduction in passenger traffic that endangers jobs - is the same.  In order for us to help protect our members’ jobs and the industry itself we need to know just how those changes are taking place. With that knowledge we can plan ahead and help those employed in this sector to carry it forward through the impact of recession.

He continued: “We are inviting all our unions that have members employed in aviation to contribute to this project by filling out a survey on The Impact of the Financial Crisis on Civil Aviation. The more that do the more we know and the better we can confront the challenges that we face.”

Aviation unions wanting to participate in the survey can contact tyler_jessica@itf.org.uk.
