Mass demonstrations kick off in Spain
14 May 2009
Transport workers’ unions are among some 300,000 people who are expected to take part in three European days of action beginning with a major rally in the Spanish capital today. The demonstrations aim to reinforce the message about protecting job security in the face of the global crisis.
Today’s protest on the streets of Madrid will be followed by demonstrations in Brussels, Belgium, tomorrow and culminate in rallies on 16 May in Prague, Czech Republic, and Berlin, Germany. Other demonstrations will also take place in Luxembourg, Romania and the UK.
Organised by the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), the protests denounce the social injustices and inequalities wrought by the abuse of financial capitalism. The trade unionists are calling for a “new social deal” that prioritises social justice, solidarity, more and better jobs and improved social protection.
John Monks, ETUC general secretary, who is at the Madrid event, said: "This Euro-demonstration today in Madrid is a big success - 150,000 people from Spain as well as from other European countries demonstrated to call for a new social deal. This first Euro-demonstration is a clear signal that the concerns of workers have to be taken into account".
