ITF backs call for broader enquiry into Scottish fishing industry

27 March 2009

The ITF has supported a demand for a wider investigation into the fishing industry in Scotland. The recommendation was made following an examination of the case of a fishing boat fire last year, which led to the death of three men.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB), which investigates accidents involving UK ships worldwide and vessels in UK territorial waters, yesterday released its report on the fire on board fishing vessel Vision II in Fraserburgh, Scotland, last year. Two Filipinos and an East European died in the fire.

The MAIB’s investigation “identified a number of concerns regarding: the fitting out of the vessel; its operation; self-certification; and inspection. It also highlighted the increased number of foreign crews living on board fishing vessels in harbour, without the consequent safety aspects being assessed.”

It also made a number of recommendations, including that the Maritime Coastguard Agency broaden the scope of its review of the safety issues associated with crews living on board fishing vessels in port.

Commenting on the report, ITF co-ordinator for Britain and Ireland, Norrie McVicar, said: “It’s a good, clean cut inquiry by the MAIB. The results are clear for all to see. We’re delighted that their findings back our call at the time of the fire for a wider investigation into conditions for foreign workers in the Scottish fishing industry. We utterly endorse the MAIB’s call for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency to take an urgent and much wider look at what is going on in our waters today.”

“These are working boats, not living quarters. If the vessels aren’t fit for their purpose then the crews should be housed ashore.”
