Algerian transport workers welcomed into ITF fold
13 February 2009
A transport workers’ union in Algeria has been given a warm welcome as a new ITF affiliate during a visit to the country by the ITF General Secretary last week.
David Cockroft’s trip to Algeria – from 3-6 February – aimed to finalise the affiliation of transport workers represented by members of the transport federation Union Générale des Travailleurs Algériens (UGTA). He was accompanied by Bilal Malkawi of the ITF’s Arab World Office and Muchtar Hili, the ITF executive board member from Tunisia. Hili has played a prominent role in helping to foster relations between Arab World trade unions and the ITF.
Commenting on ITF membership, Abdelaziz Hamichi, General Secretary of the UGTA transport federation said: “We are very pleased finally to join the global family of transport unions within the ITF.”
Cockroft also held a meeting with leaders of the maritime unions in the UGTA and with aviation unions, including those from Algiers airport, which is now managed by the Paris airport company ADP. In addition, a discussion with dockers included mention of the recent contract to operate the Algeria container terminal by global network terminal giant Dubai Ports World. Meanwhile, the UGTA’s railway federation, already an ITF affiliate, hosted a trip to a new locomotive maintenance base established by the national railways outside Algiers.
