Hebei Two released on bail
15 January 2009
The Hebei Two – Captain Jasprit Chawla and Chief Officer Syam Chetan – who were imprisoned in South Korea following an oil spill, have been released from prison on bail.
Shipping industry bodies that campaigned for their release responded positively to the men's release this morning. They were let out of custody on a surety of US$10,000 each, pending their appeal against their conviction, which is set to be heard at the Korean Supreme Court.
The campaign coalition that organised a rally at the South Korean Embassy in the UK scheduled to take place on 23 January, today decided to cancel the event, to allow a resolution of the matter, which should include a full exoneration of the two officers by the Supreme Court. The officers have made clear their desire to be proven innocent.
The ITF and its partners in the Free the Hebei Two campaign described today's release on bail as the first positive step towards resolving the case. The federation pledged to continue to assist the two men until they were free, proven innocent and back with their families, and to campaign at all levels for their acquittal. It applauded the efforts of all those worldwide who have supported the two officers, and who have today scored a real victory in the campaign for justice for them.
Jon Whitlow, ITF Seafarers Section Secretary said: “The ITF very much appreciates the enlightened decision by the Korean Supreme Court, which we consider to be a significant step in the right direction.”
