UK rally to protest against continued detention of seafarers in Korea

14 January 2009

Employers, trade unionists, and shipping industry representatives will rally outside the South Korean embassy in the UK’s capital city next week in protest against the imprisonment of two seafarers in South Korea.

The rally in support of the “Hebei Two” – Captain Jasprit Chawla and Chief Officer Syam Chetan – will take place on Friday 23 January in London. The men are serving prison sentences in South Korea, following an accident involving their vessel, the Hebei Spirit. Their anchored vessel was hit by a crane barge, causing a major oil spill. The crane barge was owned by Samsung. Although they were originally found innocent of charges relating to causing the oil spill in June 2008, an appeal court last month declared them guilty and sentenced them to imprisonment.

The rally is set to bring together a range of organisations including the ITF, shipowners’ and managers’ associations, the International Maritime Employers’ Committee as well as Indian trade unions. Also represented will be leading ship management company, V Ships, which employs the men.

A campaign for their release is attracting worldwide support, particularly across the shipping industry. Their conviction and imprisonment are regarded as part of efforts to assuage Korean public opinion and reduce Samsung’s responsibility for paying for the clean-up operation.
