Wave of protest against Hebei Spirit verdict

9 January 2009

There has been international condemnation of the South Korean court verdict of 10 December to jail the Indian master and chief engineer of the Hebei Spirit, Jasprit Chawla and Syam Chetan.

While the two men are now pursuing an appeal at South Korea’s supreme court, the National Union of Seafarers of India has said it would call on Indian seafarers to boycott ships calling at South Korean ports if the Hebei Spirit Two were not released on bail. The boycott would start on 1 February. The NUSI is also holding weekly demonstrations in cities across India. Indian consumers are already boycotting South Korean goods, such as Samsung, in protest at the jailing of the two men. There were demonstrations outside the Samsung Electronics factory in Chennai in December.

In London, the ITF and shipowners' associations are planning a rally outside the South Korean embassy on 23 January.
