Action in focus at first young people's conference
8 Outubro 2008
Young transport workers have this week outlined priority areas of work as part of a strategy to respond to their peers' needs.
Meeting at the ITF's first ever young workers' conference in Brussels, Belgium, on 7-8 October, the 65 ITF-affiliated union representatives from around the world put forward the list of priorities during discussions about plans for the future.
From dockworkers to travel agents, bus mechanics to cabin crew, workers under the age of 35 grappled with the tough questions facing them and other young workers. They concluded that precarious work, HIV, networking and building solidarity were the key issues that needed immediate attention.
They also debated how the ITF should take youth work forward, including the possibility of creating young transport workers' structures and tools for communication.
On 7 October the young worker delegates attended a rally at the European Commission to mark the global trade union campaign day for decent work (see www.ituc-csi.org/spip.php?article2428.)
Speaking from the conference today, ITF General Secretary David Cockroft said: "In the end, decent work is what we all want. The world is in a turbulent economic state. The principles of decent work, rights, and equality need strong champions and young workers have a key part to play in fulfilling that championing role."
The ITF is launching the young workers’ website today at the conference: http://www.itfglobal.org/youngworkers/
