Union activists turn spotlight on unprotected workers
2 Outubro 2008
Trade union representatives from the Asia-Pacific region have pledged to reach out to groups of unprotected workers as part of efforts to respond to their growing number.
Thirty-seven transport union activists from 13 Asia-Pacific countries, attending the first ever ITF regional summer school in Mumbai, India, from 22-26 September, agreed that organising outsourced and other unprotected casual workers was vital. They concluded that unions should target these previously neglected groups of workers through organising campaigns, particularly as outsourcing and casualisation were likely to continue. During the event, which was hosted by the ITF-affiliated National Union of Seafarers of India, they explored practical ways of achieving this.
Richard Priest representing the Transport Workers’ Union of Australia said: “The summer school confirmed that the experiences of unions, in the context of globalisation and casualisation are very similar. This will inform the way I think about the relationship between the global and the local in terms of activism.”
Commenting on the summer school generally, Ramesh Gehani of the Transport and Dockworkers’ Union from Kandla, India, stated:
“I have a major task ahead of me to organise a strategically located port. The knowledge I am carrying from the summer school will be of immense help to me in organising and campaigning.”
