Caucus delegates of a US dockers’ union have approved a recently negotiated contract.
More than 100 caucus delegates, representing the ITF-affiliated International Longshore Workers’ Union (ILWU), unanimously agreed on 21 August to send the contract, which was agreed on 28 July, to the membership for its endorsement. The agreement between the union and the Pacific Maritime Association, which represents employers, was reached following lengthy negotiations.
“We went through the proposed contract line by line,” said Greg Mitre of ILWU Local 13. “Everyone asked questions about how the new contract would work, how it would impact members, and how the committee came to the agreement. Now it’s up to the members to read it for themselves, ask questions, get answers, and decide whether to ratify it.”
Local union branches will hold membership meetings to discuss the proposed agreement in late August and early September; voting by the membership will begin in the week of 8 September and conclude by mid-September.
