Four Moldovan long distance drivers have won a pay claim against their employer in a civil court in Lithuania.

The Moldovan citizens, Ion Kozmulič, Anatolij Kuvakin, Sergej Kulbaba and Vladimir Černyšov, won a civil case against the Lithuanian firm JSC Via Vitae last week, after the company refused to pay them for three months’ work.

Assisted by the Lithuanian trade union confederation, Solidarumas, the men, who had been working legally in Lithuania, took out the case against the company in April. Apart from providing them with legal support, Solidarumas also offered them temporary accommodation and food and liaised with the relevant embassies and other authorities in Lithuania on the drivers’ behalf.

The agreement, which was signed on 13 August, will mean the drivers will receive their outstanding wages, per diem expenses and compensation for unused leave, amounting to between 10,000 litas (US$4,309) and 15,000 litas (US$6,464).

A Ukrainian driver, Anatolij Moskalenko, won a similar case against JSC Via Vitae at the beginning of August; he was also paid back wages owed to him.
