Delta Air Lines pilots: a new contract will unite them with their Northwest Airlines counterparts*

A US pilots’ union has won a joint agreement for members employed by two US airlines that have announced plans to merge.

The ITF-affiliated Air Line Pilots Association International (Alpa) reached the tentative agreement on a new joint contract with Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines on 23 June. It is due to take effect once the proposed merger has taken place. The joint pilot contract is the first step in the process of combining the two pilot groups, both represented by Alpa, and is set to create the largest unified pilot group in the world.

The agreement has been presented to each pilot group’s governing body; they are in the process of ratifying and reviewing the agreement.

Two other affiliates, the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, which represents crew at Northwest Airlines, and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers have been seeking to organise other aviation workers at Delta Air Lines for some time. Pilots are currently the only large unionised group at Delta.

Ingo Marowsky, ITF Civil Aviation Section Secretary, said: “We congratulate the union on negotiating this tentative agreement for both pilot groups. The next step is for Delta to sit down around the negotiating table with unions representing other workers as well and to reach a satisfactory agreement with them.”
