Workers should feature in European fishing industry policy says ETF
3 July 2008
The ITF’s European arm, the ETF, has urged European Union policy makers to take account of the social impact on fishers of the recent fuel crisis.
An ETF delegation made its statement during a meeting on 26 June with Patrick Tabone, Head of Cabinet of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Commissioner Joe Borg, in Brussels, Belgium. The European Commission is currently considering a package of measures, including restructuring and possible emergency aid, to assist the fishing industry in the wake of the rising cost of fuel.
The ETF is demanding that any proposed measures by the commission benefit workers directly, rather than focus purely on enterprises. The federation also appealed to the commission to build policies to help create the conditions for a socially, economically and environmentally sustainable fisheries industry.
Philippe Alfonso, ETF Fisheries Section Political Secretary, said: “The ETF recognises the need to restructure some parts of the fishing sector. We want to see a combination of emergency measures that take into account the seriousness of the current crisis, as well as structural interventions based on a long-term plan, which must aim to keep the industry alive. Restructuring will have to be driven by open talks between social partners and institutions to assist the sector during the transition.
“Measures must also be taken to protect workers. In the past, fisheries policies have often disregarded the vital social aspects.”
The European Commission’s package of measures for the fishing industry is due to be unveiled next Tuesday.
