Job assurances sought
27 June 2008
UK officers’ union Nautilus UK has expressed concern over changes being pursued by Maersk to its world-wide crewing centres. Nautilus UK was due to meet with Maersk to seek assurances over the impact of the company’s overhaul of its global crewing structure, which took effect from 1 May.
The changes are part of a wider reorganisation of Maersk’s onshore operations. The new crewing organisation is arranged into three levels:
Nautilus says seafarers would report to different crew operations staff, depending on their assigned vessels. The western crew operation in Copenhagen will deal with all the offshore tanker and supply vessels, while the eastern centre, in Singapore, will deal with the container fleet and the Maersk Humber. UK officer trainees will continue to report to Maersk Marine Services in Newcastle in the north of England. UK cadet recruitment, training and administration will be done from here.
Senior national secretary of Nautilus Paul Moloney said assurances are being sought over the changes. “One of the main concerns is job security,” he said, “and we are looking to ensure that existing agreements remain in place.” The union also wants management of UK officers to remain in the UK.
Moloney said Maersk has confirmed contracts of employment will be unchanged and there will be no change in vessel ownership or flag registry. There is an ongoing commitment to UK training of cadets, he added.
