UK tanker drivers on strike over pay

Tanker drivers in the UK began a four-day strike today over pay after talks between the unions and their employer broke down.
Drivers represented by the ITF-affiliated union, Unite, began a walkout this morning at 06:00 and are picketing a number of fuel sites run by Shell. The drivers, like many others in the oil distribution sector, were formerly directly employed by Shell employees until their jobs were subcontracted out to two “independent” transport companies, Hoyer UK and Suckling, although they continue to work exclusively for Shell. Pay talks broke down last night; Unite is now calling for Shell to intervene in the dispute.
Unite Assistant General Secretary Len McCluskey said yesterday: "We are extremely disappointed that talks with Shell's contractors Hoyer UK and Suckling have broken down this evening.
"This dispute could have been resolved if Shell had advanced a fraction of the billions of pounds in profit they make every month.”
