Ship welfare visitor course provides overview of shipping

11 June 2008

Seafarers’ welfare visitors were given an insight into vital shipping protocol and maritime customs during a training course in the Netherlands at the end of May.

Some 30 people from welfare organizations worldwide, including the Second Secretary and Consul Adrian Cruz representing the Philippine Ambassador to the Netherlands - attended the two-day ship welfare visitor course, which was organised by the International Committee on Seafarers’ Welfare (ICSW) and funded by the ITF Seafarers’ Trust.

The course took place in Rotterdam on 19-20 May and aims to equip ship visitors with a full appreciation of protocol, personal safety and security issues in ports and on board vessels. It also aims to give them an overview of shipping organisations, maritime terminology and relevant labour conventions as well as an introduction to customs and practices in the marine industry.

The courses are open to ITF inspectors.
