Dispute at DHL in Bahrain: industrial action not ruled out

Industrial action could be looming at DHL in Bahrain if the global delivery firm fails to reach an agreement with union representatives on a number of key issues.
Road and civil aviation workers at DHL are demanding that the company increase workers’ pay and recognise the DHL Workers’ Union as their representative. They are also calling for the reinstatement of the union’s President, who was sacked by the company; the matter is currently being heard in court. Company representatatives state that they do not recognise him as the union’s President.
Salman Mahfoud, General Secretary of the Bahrain Trade Union Federation, which is intervening on behalf of the union, has said that all options would be considered, including industrial action, should DHL continue to fail to reach an agreement with the union.
Bilal Malkawi, ITF Arab World Office, commented: “I am sure that the Bahrain trade union movement is strong enough to defend its members’ rights. This is a matter of freedom of association - DHL management should recognise the union’s right to bargain collectively.”
