Ukrainian unions share good practice on HIV/AIDS
5 June 2008
A Ukrainian railway union has won an agreement that prevents discrimination against HIV positive people in the workplace.
The ITF-affiliated Trade Union of Railway Workers and Transport Constructors of Ukraine shared this success with participants at the ITF Eastern European and Central Asian sub-regional HIV/AIDS workshop in Kiev, Ukraine, which it hosted. The event, which took place from 12 to 15 May, saw seven unions from Russia, Azerbaijan and Ukraine take part.
In response to an alarmingly high increase in the rate of HIV infection in the region – about 1.63 per cent of Ukrainians are believed to be living with the infection - the union developed an HIV prevention programme through its youth council. As part of the programme, the union reached a collective bargaining agreement with its employer that contains clauses on HIV/AIDS, preventing discrimination against workers who are HIV positive.
Meanwhile, another ITF affiliate the Ukrainian Free Trade Union of Locomotive Engineers revealed that it was in talks with its employer over the possibility of ensuring that rest and recreational facilities for workers are adequate; this would help make them less vulnerable to HIV infection.
The workshop aimed to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS among transport unions and disseminate information on developing collective bargaining agreements that include clauses covering HIV. Facilitated by ITF representatives Syed Asif Altaf and Sangam Tripathy, the workshop was also attended by representatives from ILOAIDS, UNAIDS and international non-governmental organisation Labour and Health Social Initiatives.
Eastern Europe is facing one of the fastest growing HIV epidemics in the world.
