Postal unions reach deal with TNT in the Netherlands
2 June 2008
Postal workers in the Netherlands have reached an “in principle” agreement with their employer, TNT, bringing a two-month pay dispute to an end.
Workers represented by Dutch trade unions have reached an agreement with TNT on a one-year collective bargaining deal. The settlement, which was negotiated on 24 May, will cover the period from 1 April 2008 until 1 April 2009. It will give workers a pay increase of three per cent, along with 0.5 per cent paid monthly until 1 April 2009. It is understood that TNT has agreed to back down on previous plans to downgrade working conditions, which had been a major sticking point for unions.
Unions are recommending the agreement to members. Meanwhile a national strike scheduled for 28 May was called off after the agreement was reached.
Over the past two months, Dutch postal workers have participated in a rolling programme of strike action as part of efforts to win a fair settlement.
