ITF calls on unions to back “Stand up for Zimbabwe” campaign
22 Maio 2008
The ITF has expressed its support for a campaign designed to end violence in Zimbabwe and show solidarity with the Zimbabwean people.
The Stand up for Zimbabwe campaign calls on people from all over Africa and throughout the world, to lobby their governments, the United Nations and regional organisations to act decisively to stop systematic violence in Zimbabwe. Participants are being urged to run activities that will show solidarity with Zimbabweans affected by post-election violence.
The campaign will be inaugurated on 25 May, a day commemorated annually as Africa Day. Events have so far been planned in countries such as Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Lesotho and South Africa.
As part of the event, the Congress of South African Unions, known as Cosatu, is working with the HIV/AIDS organisation, Treatment Action Campaign, to organise a march in Pretoria on 25 May in protest against the xenophobic violence that is sweeping the country. Reports of brutal attacks against immigrants in South Africa, including those escaping the Zimbabwe regime, have recently been documented.
ITF General Secretary David Cockroft said: “The ITF is backing the campaign and encouraging transport unions to participate to show solidarity with Zimbabwean workers. A united stand is crucial as news emerges of the horrendous attacks against immigrants in South Africa, many of whom have been forced to flee the violent Zimbabwean regime. Working people all over the world have a common interest in helping each other, particularly when they most need assistance.”
