Workers in the US to vote on national DHL contract

18 April 2008

DHL workers in the US are being balloted on a new national agreement, negotiated by the ITF-affiliated Teamsters Union.

The workers, who were sent ballot papers last week, are being asked to endorse the DHL “national master agreement”, which the union negotiated on their behalf in February. The ballot closes at 10am on 1 May; counting will begin on 1 May and continue on 2 May.

Set to cover some 8,000 workers, the agreement links staff at all major US DHL Express operations. It consists of: a national agreement covering all staff; supplements for workers at DHL’s various operations – such as pick-up and delivery, clerical, hubs, gateways and call centres - and regional and local supplements. Key features of the agreement include: annual wage increases; benefits protection; a cost of living adjustment, tuition reimbursement of up to US$1500 per annum for part-timers as well as a fairer grievance procedure.

“As more DHL workers become Teamsters, all employees’ power increases,” said Jim Hoffa, Teamsters General President. “Under the leadership of Brad Slawson Sr and DHL local union leaders, the union was able to negotiate significant economic gains for our members. This agreement also provides job security for our members by allowing DHL to better compete in this competitive industry.”
