Global Unions raises its profile worldwide

7 May 2008

Global Unions extended its international reach on 1 May when it launched a website for the group, which brings together the world’s trade union organisations.

Unveiling the new website www.global-unions.org Fred Van Leeuwen, Chair of the Global Unions General Council, said: “Global-unions.org is the new starting point for anyone anywhere who works or wants to work and is looking for someone to fight their corner. It’s the new face of Global Unions, the organisation that brings together 12 global union federations with worldwide reach, covering all areas of employment, and all working to defend decent conditions and wages.”

“The website is just the latest way to improve how we talk to the world. It launched on 1 May when we also showcased everything from labour films to a Second Life world and a labour related film festival in Geneva,” he added.

The site emerges from the work of a new Global Unions task force on communications and marks the start of an initiative that is set to send out a fresh and coherent trade union message from the international labour movement.

”Global unions are the single biggest force for positive change in the world today – and we should not be quiet about it. This initiative will spread the word about what workers are saying all over the world” said International Trade Union Confederation General Secretary Guy Ryder.
