Osanloo film to be screened at May day event in Geneva

30 April 2008

An ITF film documenting the fight for fundamental trade union rights in Iran led by union leader Mansour Osanloo, who remains in detention, will be shown at a May day event in Switzerland tomorrow.

“A night of labour film shorts”, organised by the International Metalworkers’ Federation, will feature the film, which depicts the struggle of the Tehran bus drivers’ and promotes the international campaign to win Osanloo’s release from a Tehran prison.

The film is being shown along with a range of other film shorts from Australia, Mexico, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan and the UK. ITF Head of Information and Policy, Sarah Finke will participate in a question and answer session after the film.

The event is taking place at the Grütli Theatre in Geneva tomorrow evening and is being supported by 10 global union federations including the ITF, the International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers’ Unions and the International Federation of Journalists as well as by the International Trade Union Confederation.

"More and more, unions around the world are using film and video to explain issues, motivate membership, persuade policy makers and educate the public," said Anna Biondi, Director of the International Trade Union Confederation Geneva Office and Secretary of the International Labour Organisation Workers' Group, who will open the event.

"A common theme in all of these movies is how working people go about securing and defending their rights, pay and conditions, in the hope of improving their lives," explained Biondi. "These stories speak to us all, in every part of the world."
