Brian Orrell, the general secretary of an ITF-affiliated union, saw his 30 years of service to the maritime industry recognised at an award ceremony in the UK last week.
Orrell, who has headed up Nautilus UK over the past 14 years, was presented with a Lloyd’s List lifetime achievement award for 2008 at a gathering in London on 2 April. Last year he received the Order of the British Empire in the new year’s honours list.
Orrell, who has been an official for the union for 30 years, has also been chair of the ITF’s Seafarers’ Section and the ETF’s EU Maritime Committee as well as a member of the UK Trades Union Congress General Council.
He led the seafarers’ group in negotiations that resulted in a number of international maritime instruments, including the International Maritime Labour Convention in 2006 and the Seafarers Identify Documents Convention. In addition, he has been a lead negotiator and policy developer on the International Bargaining Forum, which negotiates with employers’ groups to secure decent working conditions for seafarers on board 3,700 flag of convenience vessels.
